Tips and tools for users
During digitalising, images are often consulted with Acrobat-viewer. Useful shortcuts (in Dutch) exist that save mouse miles, clicks, and RSI risk.
In addition, shortcuts running on MsWindows for manipulating task, windows, and various programs are are available on a page of Mantrix: www.sneltoetsen.com (in Dutch).
To insert special characters in multiple programs easily: Turn on special characters (in Dutch) in MsWindows.
A lot of scrolling is fundamentally wrong. Still cursed with lousy software on your PC? At least set your scroll bar wider (in Dutch).
Do you want to view quickly which Alt-key combinations are available? Turn on the pre set that shows the underlined characters (Alt-shortcut) (in Dutch) of fields and menu options.
Tips and tools for developing
Administrative applications are easy to prototype with a spreadsheet program, such as OpenOffice.org-Calc or Excel. Please contact ErgoS (contact [AT] ergos.nl : attn E. Mulder) when you want to see some examples.
For easy collection of screen prints and many other activities that can be automated, Ac'tivAid is a wonderful collection of scripts, based on the hotkey-macro-program AutoHotkey. If you want a quick start with collecting ScreenShot under MsWindows unzip PortableActivAid.zip in any directory and run 'Start–ActivAid.exe'. After a while [c't] appears in the systemtray. Double click for more options. Look at ScreenShot to adjust the effects of <Alt+PrintScreen>. This version might not be up-to-date and may require adjustment to your own situation.
One of the best combinations to review web applications is the use of Firefox and an add-on like FireShot, Firebug, or Webdeveloper. Apart from that, Fireshot is compatible with InternetExplorer.
Should your application also work under older versions of IE? IE-tester is the ideal tool to test your application under InternetExplorer 5.5 or 6.0. Simply copy the link you want to test with Ctrl-C in the clipboard and see the behaviour under IE-5.5, IE-6, IE-7, and IE-8 at once.
When merely behaviour under IE-7 is of importance, the develop tool of InternetExplorer-8 is a better choice: Menu: Tools | Developer Tools | Browser mode .
